September 15 marked the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The media, however, is not focusing much on this topic as the President´s Proclamation comes one day after controversial comments on Monday by a Democrat Latino Congressman blasting President Obama.
The President delivered his proclamation on Tuesday. He stated that the story of Hispanics in America is the story of America itself. The President outlined the Hispanic community’s values -love of family, a deep and abiding faith, and a strong work ethic- as those of America’s values.
Obama indicated that Hispanics bring together the rich traditions of communities with centuries-old roots in America and the energy and drive of recent immigrants.
Obama pointed out that Hispanics have played a vital role in the moments and movements that have shaped our country. They have enriched our culture and brought creativity and innovation to everything from sports to the sciences and from the arts to our economy.
His proclamation also remembered how Hispanics have served with honor and distinction in every conflict since the Revolutionary War, and they have made invaluable contributions through their service to our country.
In the business area, Obama recognized how Hispanics lead corporations and not-for-profits, and social movements and places of learning. He also pointed out how Hispanics serve in government at every level from school boards to state houses, and from city councils to Congress.
Obama had words for Justice Sonia Sotomayor as he indicated: “And for the first time in our Nation’s history, a Latina is seated among the nine Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.”
Like his predecessors, Obama stated: “To honor the achievements of Hispanics in America, the Congress, by Public Law 100-402, as amended, has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating September 15 through October 15 as ‘National Hispanic Heritage Month’”.
President Obama´s Proclamation comes just one day after he was blasted by a top Latino Democrat Congressman on Monday for modifying his health-care plan regarding “illegals,” using President Obama´s own words.
The criticism was leveled in Spanish by Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, a Democrat from Illinois 4th District, who was the first Latino member of Congress to endorse Barack Obama for president.
Gutierrez made his remarks in Washington, D.C., while participating in a panel discussion on immigration reform sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.
He was incensed by the Obama administration’s announcement over the weekend that it was going to bar undocumented workers from participating in the health insurance exchange.
“I think that the Hispanic Congressional Caucus, with their friends and their allies, have to think at a strategic point,” Gutierrez continued. “At which point do we say: ‘I’m not going to cooperate any more?’”
Gutiérrez was one of the most outspoken opponents to the “Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005.” He voted against it and worked with other members of Congress to defeat that bill in December of 2005.
On the other hand, the Republican National Committee Chairman, Michael Steele, released this note to begin the celebrations of National Hispanic Heritage Month: “Today, I am proud to join with my fellow Americans in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. Between September 15th and October 15th the Republican National Committee will partner with the Hispanic American community to honor their past, present, and future contributions to our great nation. I hope all Americans will join me in celebrating the cultural richness the Hispanic American community has brought to America throughout the years.”

Atta boys to the RNC for actively participating in Hispanic Heritage Celebrations. More effort needs to be made to bring the Hispanic Community into the Republican Party.
Very good commentary.
