Urgent Update on Honduras: Zelaya Announces Intention to Recognize Legitimacy of November Elections

Ousted President Manuel Zelaya

In a Sept .25 interview with Bloomberg, ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya made known his intention to honor the coming November 25 elections.  This is seen as an attempt to open talks with the acting government headed by interim president Roberto Micheletti.  What’s more is that Zelaya has also reaffirmed his bid to return to power, fulfilling the duration of his term originally slated to end in January of 2010.  Zelaya is currently housed within the Brazilian embassy in Honduras to which utilities have been cut by the Honduran government.  He successfully returned from exile under the cover of darkness earlier this week.

Countless efforts have been made by the United Nations, the Organization of American States, numerous Latin American presidents, and U.S. president Barack Obama, urging Zelaya’s return to power.  The premise of debate, as to whether or not Mr. Zelaya should be restored to power, is whether or not his removal was a coup d’etat, or a legal ouster carried out under constitutional auspices.  Zelaya had attempted to call for a vote abolishing presidential term limits which would have allowed his name on the ballot in the aforementioned November elections.

This is a great article. I have linked to it in my comments to others’ blogs that have not devoted nearly the amount of attention to the matter that The Americano has. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Keep the updates coming! This is a very important story to follow. I concur with “Concerned American”.

FINALLY somebody presents a balanced view on this issue. Fox News calls Micheletti’s government the result of a coup, and CNN calls it the “de facto” government, both of which state/insinuate the same conclusion (it is an illegitimate government) on an issue that is hardly black and white.
