Newt Gingrich

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich talks with The Americano about the importance of Hispanic Heritage, the uniqueness of the culture and people, and the history of Hispanics in this country.

“I believe that the basic conservative message of lower taxes, greater opportunity, the chance to keep more of your money in your pocket for your family… I think those are messages that reach out to people of all backgrounds. They certainly attract people of Hispanic background,” states Speaker Gingrich regarding the importance of conservatism for all Americans.

As Speaker Gingrich has explained previously, English should be the language of government. However, he understands the importance of being a country of many languages. “I think we can be a country of great diversity and great unity at the same time. We have to distinguish which we are talking about,” explains Speaker Gingrich.

His message to American Hispanics: “We have an amazing country. Its a country open to work, to talent, to sincere commitment. We need to find the way to work together so that every American has the best possible education, the best possible health, and the best possible job. I am convinced we can build a better America open to even more opportunities, including every American and a better future. I think that is what we have to work together to create.”

As a student of Spanish language and Hispanic culture, I find it comforting that a political figure as prominent as Newt is reaching out to the Hispanic community. I have spent years learning how to speak Spanish, and about the various governments, histories and peoples of Latin America. The more we all connect, the more significant and valuable an education in Spanish and Hispcanic culture becomes, and this may entice more people to learn about nations other than their own. Political discussions such as the one Newt is starting with the Americano is a great place to start.

  2. John McIntyre says:

This is a great interview. Of course, the other newspapers and the “latino leaders” on the left… have silenced this as they know it is a great thing for Hispanics and for the GOP! Newt is on the right track!

  3. Fernan Restrepo says:

Fantastic interview. The fact that Newt is a historian and understands that Hispanics have been here from the start is refreshing to know and hear. Spanish is such a beautiful language and knowing many languages gives you an edge in your professional life. However, I agree… English has to be the language of government. Has to.

    Applause Mr. Gingrich

  5. Kaye Boye says:

Melissa Blair introduced the Americano to me. I am very happyto see a conservative man as respectable and esteemed as Newt Gingrich having an impact on the Mexican-American Community. As a bilingual teacher in California I became aware of many of the hardships which face this group of Americans. Given the diversities of our cultures, I believe that we as conservatives do share the same fundamental philosophies of life: God and Family, being first. I feel that we are all Americans before we break down the barriers of the less important labels of ethnicity. We all want what is best for our children. Ethnicity has nothing to do with that. I do believe however , that it is our shared belief in our creator that is the ultimate barrier breaker that places us all on the same page of life. I appreciate Mr. Gingrich’s contribution to the Americano

  6. I too applaud Mr. Gingrich for his valiant efforts. In my opinion, the key for the Republican Party’s viability is to truly become a universal Party founded solely on principle and not what it is today, at least at first glance, a Party of principle mixed with contentious voices of a divisive nature. If traditional universal values are what binds us together and these are what we are truly fighting for, then why does the Republican Party associate itself with characters who carry a mixed message dressing up inflammatory attitudes with principle? This concession for temporary political gain will eventually lead the Party to become ethnic and regional.
