Threat of Terrorism in Latin America

| Print This Post Print This Post
The recent attempted terrorist attack on an American passenger plane during the holidays has forced U.S. officials to re-evaluate our intelligence priorities. As a result, the growing threat of radical Islamic terrorism in Latin America also requires more attention. However, due to the war in the Middle East, tracking terrorism in Latin America is not a high priority. Jim Bergman, Drugs Enforcement Agency Director for the Andean Region of South America, recently characterized the current issues as “an unholy alliance between South American narco-terrorists and Islamist extremists.” Furthermore, SOUTHCOM analysts understand the importance of tracking terrorism in the region because they have better intelligence even though it might not seem as significant when it is funneled up the ladder to Washington. So, is Latin America a good location for terrorist organizations to strengthen their ability to harm Americans? Yes, due to the close proximity to American soil and the inability of our immigration officials to keep track on illegal immigrants coming into the country.
Hezbollah is considered to be one of the largest international terrorist organizations in Latin America. The Argentinean media reports that Hezbollah supporters and Iran were responsible for the bombings of an Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires. Abolghasem Mesbahi was an Iranian intelligence agent who allegedly admitted that in Argentina, former President Carlos Menem supposedly accepted $10 million dollars of bribe money to cover up the connection between Iran and Hezbollah concerning the bombing. In December of 2006, the Treasury Department announced that nine individuals in Brazil and Paraguay were financing Islamic terrorism and were involved in the AMIA bombing. One of the masterminds behind the September 11 attacks was Khalid Shaikh Mohammad (KSM). Less known, is that in 1995 KSM spent three weeks in Brazil meeting with Muslims in the region and also founded a charity called the Holy Land Foundation to raise funds for Osama bin Laden. According to the U.S. Treasury, the charity is designated as a terrorist supporter and funds were reportedly given to Hamas. KSM went to the region because the tri-border area of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay is a safe haven for radical Islamic terrorists that use the area for smuggling, money laundering, and arms trafficking.
In 2006, the Iranian government opened an embassy in Managua, Nicaragua. Since its opening, Iranians have been accused of crossing the Nicaraguan to meet with Hondurans and take photos of strategic infrastructures, causing concern to the Honduran government. The growing Iranian influence in Latin America does not just affect one country, but the security of the entire region. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that “Iran is expanding its ties with the likes of Venezuela’s Chavez and the FARC guerillas in Colombia, and using its embassies, government officials, quasi-government entities, and proxies such as Hezbollah to further extend its influence and operations in Latin America.” Documents obtained from the computer of FARC member Raul Reyes in Ecuador show correspondence between the terrorist organization and Daniel Ortega. Apparently, the documents also show a strong relationship between Ortega and President of Libya Muammar Al Qaddafi. Ortega received financial assistance from Qaddafi when he was in charge of the Sandinistas party in Nicaragua. When Ortega became president in 2006, Qaddafi financed his trip alongside his family to travel to Libya, Venezuela, Iran, and Cuba. In the 1980s, the U.S. Department of State held Qaddafi has one of the biggest supporters of international terrorism. Nicaragua is also the only country in Central America without a Financial Intelligence Unit, a government agency that helps to monitor possible money laundering schemes and prevents terrorist financing activities.
Cuba has remained on the State Department’s list of state sponsor of terrorism since 1982 because it has assisted terrorist organizations by providing safe haven and financial assistance. Cuba also has strong relationships with other state sponsors of terrorism such as Iran, Sudan, and Syria. Many analysts look at Cuba as a small island that does not have much to offer. However, what they fail to realize is that Cuba has one of the best intelligence operations in the world. Being able to collect great intelligence gives Cuba an advantage over wealthier countries because they can sell that information to Iran, Venezuela, or Syria. In addition, Cuba’s close proximity to Miami makes it an even better hotspot to conduct surveillance on American infrastructure targets.
The State Department included Venezuela on the list of countries not cooperating with antiterrorism efforts for the third year in a row and efforts continue on Capitol Hill to include it as a state sponsor of terrorism. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has become involved and is closely associated with the FARC, as he has advocated taking the FARC off the United States and European terrorism list. One grave national security threat is that in Venezuela, it is still easy to forge citizenship and travel documents making the country a potentially attractive spot for terrorists. Currently, an Iranian airline started having direct flights into Caracas. Thus, possible terrorists can travel by plane from Iran to Venezuela, from Venezuela to Nicaragua, Nicaragua to Cuba, and essentially make their way closer to the United States. These passengers do not need visas to travel within these countries, so it is difficult to detect and monitor their movements.
So, what can be done to counter any possible attacks? Governments in Latin America must become more involved to stop terrorism. While the Department of State currently provides approximately $9 million dollars in Anti-Terrorism Assistance for training and equipment to Latin American countries, this is not enough. The U.S. should spend more money in training and assisting foreign militaries in counterterrorism operations, while teaching law enforcement officials how to collect and analyze intelligence information. Corruption and weak institutions in the region make it easier for terrorist organizations to develop and flourish. If minimal attention is given to Latin America now and instead wait until the problem gets worse, it may prove to be too late. Our main goal should be to remain proactive instead of reactive when a possible threat comes our way from Latin America.

As you read this alarming but true current event keep in mind the simple but powerful words of President Obama
Yes, we can. The operative word is we, that includes, you, and me and us. The president can not alone move America into the realization of the American Dream but rather it must be and will be a joint effort of the American people. That is democracy at work. That is how we move in the direction of the American Dream. We all must participate. We must all become America’s true global leaders no matter what our position in society. If others choose to live their lives in their bitter generational past, so be it, but the rest of us will move forward demonstrating leadership to those who need to understand and witness the true meaning and making of leaders for today. It is for this reason that I believe that President Obama is our leader today. This was not the time for just another president but rather a man with vision and a heart for America. Our ship has set sail. The course has changed. It is crucial that we Americans despite our differences, our mistakes and even our fears undergird our leader, and insulate him from those that seek the destruction of the purpose and intent that was and is America. Let us make a good to show the world of the stuff that makes up real Ameriicans! We can and will do this!

Statement by Denise L Weeks to Boston Public Schools Formerly of 25 Alpine Street (now homeless)

    617-763-0501

I am an African American woman who happens to be outspoken on the behalf of the children in the Boston Schools who are predominately children of color. I have been harassed one could say from the time I entered BPS until this very moment. When you become what the union considers a “troublemaker” you are targeted for harassment on the job. The harassment may emanate from a principal, teacher, union, and or a crazed union teacher and/or all. (No pun intended) The harassment on the job usually includes all of the following:

    · Isolation- teachers ignore your presence in the school

    · Student assignment- students with greatest discipline issues are placed in your classroom each year

    · Materials stolen from your class

    · Purchased materials lost each year (student texts)

    · Constant interruptions by administration/and or teachers

    · Heat not working or excessive heat (always an excuse)

    Little or no custodial services

    · Paper work submitted never completed or lost

    · Scenarios to project you as an incompetent teacher throughout system

    · Telling prospective parents mistruths

    · Breaking into your car

    · Organized groups of teachers to misrepresent you/with or without administrative support

Once you enter into a serious disagreement with the union, you either submit or your career will forever be an uphill battle. I did submit and did indeed enter into an uphill battle with Richard Stutman president of the Boston Teacher Union. During the last public meeting Richard Stutman stated, “We have a way of dealing with trouble makers, those who don’t go along with the game plan. We have a dirty tricks team; we have ways of bringing people around.” I did know of the dirty tricks but I never knew exactly how dirty they actually would become.

Dirty tricks to me generally meant, work to rule. You did no more than the contract stated. Of course many teachers who are totally pro-union took it to a greater level. If you could undermine a school wide initiative under the contract so be it. It meant if anyone said or suggested anything about any teacher no matter how negative their influence upon the children, that person becomes a school target or school wide system target. Your character will be defamed throughout the system just for speaking the truth. Only the strong survive their attacks. Many teachers and administrators back down because it can be a bit brutal especially when dealing with a classroom of children every day or just interacting with your colleagues on a day to day basis. Once again this maintains the status quo.

During bussing Black teachers experienced a lot of harassment on the job, but it was not fully addressed. That is the reason why today it is rearing its ugly head in a more deceitful manner. As time went on the union felt that they could maintain the status quo without much dissent. After all they still felt that the teachers of color were intruders into a system that belonged to them even though the population that was being served was drastically changing. Of course on many levels things did improve, but on many levels thing did not improve. I confronted the Black and Latino lead teachers and BEAM and they basically told me that “these people” are dangerous and they did not want to get involved, and they never did. Many are hiding in various church settings-good people but walking in fear. It seemed to me that they had secured their positions in leadership and principalships and did not want to rock the boat. What they did not realize that the battle was supposed to continue. It is a continual battle for each generation to ensure that the educational process is fair to all students.

At one point in my early teaching career when I presented various issues regarding discipline school wide and academic concerns I had men’s underpants with bowel movement placed in my classroom, the classroom was suddenly denied heat, and custodial services. Books were constantly “taken” from my classroom. It was never addressed by administration or the union representative who was right across the hall from me. Even though the union and administration were supposedly separate entities they worked hand in hand in harassment directed towards me in the schools. This was meant to silence my voice. I do not want to belabor this point because this was the small stuff when one considers the politics that take place in our school systems, but it only continued to escalate as I continued to advocate for student

As the years went by I continued to present my concerns on behalf of the children in Boston. It would generally infuriate administration as well as the union. We were expected to stick to our class and be happy that we had a job. The union has the hands of most administrators tied so they are unable to really address teachers that are struggling teachers, which allows status quo to remain intact. If an administrator goes against a teacher and a strong union teacher in particular, there will be trouble for sure. The union teachers will keep the administrator so busy with complaints that they have no time to administer within the school and the administrator will appear incompetent. No one likes to address these issues openly because that is not the Boston way and is certainly not the union way. As the years went by, the situation became more intolerable. In good conscience I simply could not return to a school system that disrespected the rights of all children to have a quality education and my right to speak, and a system that refuse to look at issues within the school system.

    Literacy Coach

After becoming a literacy coach it became crucial to have administrative support if the literacy initiative was going be effective. Administrators would demand that a schedule be created and then would ignore or change the schedule without informing me. Constant interruptions were allowed during the literacy instruction making it almost impossible to be effective. Visible administrative support was minimal and in some cases the administrators made it a point that they did not support the effort at all. If teachers do not see the support of the administration then they can make the choice to support the initiative or ignore the initiative. The fault is really because there is no ground breaking accountability that ensures working effort on the part of the coach, teacher and administrator-so the effort can fluctuate from day to day or week to week. Court Street receives written documentation that the program is being implemented when indeed it depended upon the administration and their interpretation or support of the initiative. Meanwhile the test scores reflect that our children are in trouble in literacy along with other academic areas.

It was at this point that I was told by my supervisor Cathleen Kraal (one of the directors) Director of Literacy that “I better just learn to get along, that is the way the system works in Boston and nothing is going to change. Court Street knows about principals who don’t support the effort. I know it as a fact and nothing is going to change.” I knew at that point that it was time for me to make my exit from Boston. I had had enough. But I would not exit quietly.

I figured that if I could bring to the table the issues of education and racism within the system we could bring about positive change. Instead I discovered that individuals have to be willing to change and to participate in the process of change. The director of the Literacy Department was constantly suggesting new ways to present literacy to our youth. It seemed that we were constantly trying out new things before we could determine if the initial effort was effective. As part of our professional development we were supposed to read and discuss the impact of racism in our teaching and learning. This effort was very uncomfortable for some or many because no matter how many times it was introduced it was never completed. Even when coaches were asked to bring in their personal readings to share in a book talk: if I brought in a book that dealt with political and racial issues it was obvious that it was frowned upon.

I would constantly hear literacy coaches talking about our literacy issues in the Boston Schools and how it appeared that a lot of stuff was not working. For whatever reason those types of comments were shut down. The truth is that we were functioning on a grant and we had to demonstrate that it was truly working, even if it wasn’t. It seems ludicrous to ignore the fact that the majority of our students were not reading or writing on level, and were not even passing the basic writing prompt without teacher assistance of editing and representations. So, my query became why it is so easy to accept this level of work in Boston and yet the town of Brookline next door would not allow this type of behavior. I wanted us as professionals of various races to have this discussion for the benefit of the students. Institutional racism is a reality in Boston and needed to be brought to the table if we really wanted to help these students. I could see immediately that this was not demonstrating the go along to get along philosophy of Boston Public Schools and the Boston Teachers Union. Have we given up in frustration or is there another initiative working behind the scenes? Well, these types of questions were not to be tolerated in our meetings or our school system. I was just to accept things as they are according to the various department heads, and administrators in the Boston schools. I could not and look at the faces of the students and pretend that all was well. So, I made my forced departure.

I began to notice certain things that I hadn’t noticed before. Many times when I would prepare for a literacy presentation at a particular school I would pretty much use the same computer so I could save things on the desk top. I began to notice strange odors’ coming from the area that I prepped that was similar to the odor I experienced in my home. It was sometimes intense enough to make me feel slightly dizzy. It was not until it became consistent that I realized that something was up. But who do you tell this to and sound sane? I did however, notice that certain individuals would insist that I not use their computer at all, or when I went into a room they would immediately leave the room. On many occasions I had to give up the preparation because the chemical was too intense to function.

So not only did I have to deal with harassment on the job but now it was taking place at home and at work. It would not be until even later that I realized that each time I left my car individuals were assigned to put chemicals in my car that would cause me to become extremely dozy. The one thing I knew for sure that as soon as I sat in the car I became extremely tired and when I left the car I was no longer tired. My lead coach would come to my session and immediately fall into a deep sleep without excuse.

Literacy coaches ordered their lunches through the Cathleen Kraal during our professional development times. I always wondered why she kept insisting that she would handle my lunch personally, and would tell the other coaches not to touch my lunch. I think everyone found this rather odd because it was obvious that we disagreed politically, and had very little social contact. She would sometimes order me two lunches with extras. I would eat it, never, never suspecting anything from a person in leadership. I would find myself unable to stay awake almost after the first bite. I also knew that other individuals must have known because no one would touch my food, or even receive any food products from me, and looked almost terrified at the thought of eating with me. The food that I suspected that was causing me drowsiness, certain coaches would bring to the table or suggest strongly that I go get more while snickering with one another.

The major issue began when under my auspices Lesley University offered a school where I was coaching a $10,000 grant to purchase books for grades three through five. I told the University that I could not accept the grant in good faith because the teachers and administrator did not support the literacy initiative and just wanted the books. That is a no-no in Boston. At that point my negative relationship with the union and administration developed into a hostile state and one of the deputies had to step in. There was no way I could back down so I ended up begin transferred to another school. I was again asked to keep my mouth shut. But what I saw was such a disappointment. The situation at my schools could have been turned into a 60 minute special. I was so uncomfortable with behavior that was inappropriate that I gently approached the principal to no avail. I spoke to the deputies who told me that they did not want to hear anything negative about their principals. It was out of order but I could see no level of accountability in the system that would support or rectify the situation for the children in the school. The principal became more hostile. I realized that the system was broken. I wondered how I could see things so obviously wrong within our system of teaching and learning and yet it goes unnoticed by Court Street. Once again I could not or would not compromise; I could not pretend that I did not see what I saw. I felt like something needed to be done. So, I approached Cathleen Kraal, my supervisor, and her response was, “Court Street knows about these principals, and that is just the way it is. Nothing is going to change, and I better stop complaining or I would be without a job.”

The question became whether it was about me or about the kids. It was definitely about the kids, so I did not quit complaining. What is one to do when you look at elementary Black & Latino boys wasting away during the school day, fighting, yelling, and running around the building? Do you ignore it to keep a check coming in or do you recognize that we must speak up for the kids? I recognized my accountability to the children. I wanted to look them in the face in their future and say I did all that I could and was not silent. So, went my life at school. I became one of the most controversial individuals in Boston Public Schools.

Most coaches were assigned at least two schools. Privately other literacy coaches would approach me and say that all that I said about my assigned schools that they, too, had observed it in some of their schools, but they did not want to make waves and lose their job, or upset the principal. Such was the life of a literacy coach in Boston.

I attended a literacy coaches’ meeting with Richard Stutman, president of the Boston Teachers Union. At the last meeting I attended in his presence he made a statement, “I know how to handle troublemakers. We have a dirty tricks team, and we know how to handle those people who cause problems.” It was at that point that everything became obvious to me, and I realized that I was a target of the Boston Teachers Union, the Boston Public Schools and various unions around New England, including the MBTA Things became clear. The constant queries on my eating habits, purchasing habits by individuals on the job and individuals around my neighborhood led me to believe something was up.

The one thing for certain was that the individuals determined to silence me were utilizing the same chemicals on the job and in my home. On several occasions I had to leave my home in Brookline in the early morning hours because it felt like my lungs were going to explode. No matter how often I called my landlord to inspect the unit, they stated there was nothing wrong, but it was obvious to my body that something was going on and proving it was going to be the greater challenge.

I had lived calmly in Brookline MA for over thirty years with no problems until things became very serious and intolerable. I could only believe that management of the apartment complex was involved in this situation. Someone was coming into my apartment. Since I did very little entertaining and for the most part it included only teachers and coaches during lunch on professional development days, I could only suspect management in the form of Ellen Walker of the Druker Company. But of course no one owned up to involvement in this situation. And then there were her constant inquiries from her about my specific eating habits, what socks I wore in the morning, shoes, what did I eat for lunch, etc… It seemed odd because we never had any serious conversation until she started querying about my eating and clothing habits.

I also noticed that every time I went to the laundry room on my floor I would find individuals coming out with certain items in their hands and run into their apartment or the elevator. But who would I relay my suspicions to about the matter. Then matters got worse. One day I was introduced to my new neighbor. Suddenly, I was having some sort of chemical pumped into my unit. I could sense the direction. I truly did not know what to do, so I sealed up any open holes that allowed access. I noticed that when that happened he started passing the chemical under the apartment door. One day I jumped up and caught this grown man that I had never met jump up from the floor as I opened the door and start running back to his apartment.

The heat in my unit was turned off and some sort of chemical would literally attack my throat through the cold air of the winter months. This went on for several years but I never connected it before Richard Stutman spoke that day.

What on earth did I do to have these crazy people trying to harm me? What did I do and what could I do? It was obvious that I was no longer safe in my home of thirty years, and I was certainly not safe on the job. I began to think back over the years and decided not to bring up those similar events and make a connection at that point but would reserve reflection; for a later period. By this time I had become a health freak and was careful with my diet and health. I knew what I ate and how my body responded to food, water and the environment, and my body was telling me that this situation was dangerous. I had no social relationships outside of the field of education since teaching and learning absorbed most of my life so I knew this attack and these individuals attacking me were and are part of a white extremist organization. Life was no longer what it had been or what I expected it to be. I decided to retire and fight from without the system at the injustices against the kids and myself. Little did I know that what was happening was just the beginning?

I moved in a hurried mode into my daughter’s brand new condominium, and thought the change would be good for me. It turned out to be one of the most challenging periods of my life still being lived out to this moment. The third night into this cute little adorable condominium-the nightmare began. Instead of two individuals directing chemicals towards me I now had many individuals targeting me at a level and pace that sounds unbelievable. But I had to focus on survival and thrival in this situation because I realized that I was definitely a serious target. Somehow my actions in BPS made me now a state wide and region wide target. The unit in which I dwelled was now like a chemical pincushion with chemicals being pumped 24 hours a day into it. That meant every unit that is contiguous to the condominium began pumping the chemicals. Each time I confronted them-everyone went into denial. I thought how this could be happening- I am no longer attached to Boston Public Schools but the struggle went on. Believe it or not but at times I had about 10 people give or take a few- people I had never met and could not call their name-outside of my unit spraying chemicals into my unit and at my car, and my person if I was walking, driving or using public transportation.. These individuals were of different races and nationalities which seemed even more bizarre but was my reality. My neighbors began to pump chemicals 24 hours a day, and when I left they entered my abode. I had to tape every spot that allowed them access to my unit which meant my living situation was unbelievable-but it was the only way I could breathe. These individuals created cracks in the floor, holes in the ceilings in all the room, created large spaces between the planks of wood to allow them to pump more chemicals, and to eventually send sparks and electrical currents through the floor to burn my feet. It became a living nightmare. No matter how many times I approached them they would each deny their participation. The next thing was to contaminate the drinking and bathing water which began to burn my body. If I stood anywhere on the floor you could be certain that someone was sending up sparks. I could actually see the sparks shoot up through the sinks and the floor boards, through electrical sockets. And I thought these crazy corrupted people are affiliated with Boston Public Schools and our kids and we want to know why it is difficult to move or advance them into our society. I would hear them go in and out of my car putting some sort of chemical throughout the interior. If I left the car for five minutes they would go into action. The things that happened at this unit and in my life are directly linked to my advocacy for Boston’s children. And yet there has never been an investigation on or off the job.

One of my loves is the public library. Since Ellen Walker and my neighbors broke into my house and destroyed two lap tops, made internet access impossible, or listening to the radio or television possible, I would seek solace in a library. I would read and use the internet and research and write regarding my situation. I suddenly found that my skin was burning and itching as I sat in any library. It became like a Rod Sterling special. Believe it or not it was similar to some of the same type of burning I experienced at my abode. It hit me. There is a person in the library that is spraying me constantly with chemicals. If he could and it seemed that he was trying to burn a hole in my back and through my foot. I had never run into anyone as demented and wicked as these individuals, but they were real, and went to work every day, and laughed and smiled and pretended normalcy. I guess some individuals will not do their job unless there is direct supervision and accountability. I knew this person in the library and those at school and the MBTA had to be part of the white extremist network practicing institutional racism at the nth degree. I also knew that they was creating evidence against themselves because if I sat in the library for five hours, they would spray chemicals for five hours, and I knew that the condo walls and floor were full of evidence, and I knew that T ventilation systems were full of poisonous chemicals, and could be traced back to an individual and validate my claims. I knew that the evidence against them began in the condominium in Mattapan. But I could not get the support or interest of Boston Public School administration whether they were fearful or not.

I wish I could say that things go better or that there was any doubt in my mind about what happened. I know that the Boston Teachers Union is directly linked to a white extremist group engaged in institutional racism that is bigger than Boston and deadly. I fear for our students, teachers and administrators. This extremist group has an agenda and will stop at nothing to see it through. They have and continue to recruit young whites to participate in there hate crimes. Though their thinking is delusional they persist. But they must be stopped and persecuted according to the law.

I am deeply saddened that considering the number of years I spent in total dedication to the children of Boston, spending sometimes two hundred dollars a month of my money to buy books for my class when I was denied them, though I had sometimes twenty children over my house on a Saturday for learning and fun, and though…, I never received anyone willing to demand an investigation into the matter. What if this were true? I know for a fact that unit 7 at 25 Alpine Street still holds the evidence. The walls and floors, ceiling and surrounding areas are permeated with chemicals, and a simple investigation will demonstrate that Boston Public Schools is in trouble, our children are in danger, and the citizens of Boston are in danger as long as these homegrown terrorists continue to be part of our society… I am requesting what I have requested before: I want Boston Public Schools to demand an investigation into this situation of harassment and violation of my civil rights as a citizen of the Commonwealth and to rethink the inner workings of Boston Public Schools and to have the condominium inspected and the units around it. If what I say proves to be true, then we have dangerous characters in our school buildings.

I did not return to the school system in 2007. I was not willing to compromise and the union certainly was not.

Please note some of the following reasons I moved from 133 Park Street Unit 403 Brookline, MA 02446

    · Neighbors constantly questioned me regarding my eating and exercise regiment

    · Food products in my house were contaminated

    · Gas and various odors entered my house through electrical sockets, air pockets, under doorways, and through windows

    · Water contaminated (drinking & shower)

    · could hear someone doing something with the pipes each time I would take a shower or turn on the faucets

    · Continually found dust particles and some sort of chemical around my house/even though I continually dusted the area

    · Car broken into/ personal items would end up missing and then chemically treated and returned an hour or day later

    · Items found in my laundry constantly even though I checked before I put items in washer/ noticed that each time I would leave laundry individuals on my floor or above would go into the laundry room with a small bag and rush out without explanation

    · Each time I exited building I was queried-people wanted to know where & route I was taking

    · noticed that at certain point I felt as if I were choking during my exercise routine as if something were being sprayed in my face

    · Car was constantly covered with excessive dust even though I had underground parking and it was not a problem previous

I had a favorite restaurant that I ate every day, Common Ground Café. I did not know their nature until it was too late. It is for this reason that I am informing you before others suffer the consequences of trusting them. Common Ground is part of a white extremist group directly linked to Boston Public Schools and the Boston Teachers Union that participated and still does participate in attempting to poison me. It was not until one day when one of the gentleman café workers offered me what he called a special cup of tea especially brewed for me. Within a few seconds of taking a sip I began to bleed profusely. I just made it to the ladies room. The bleeding lasted three weeks-nonstop. To drive the matter home-the same scent of the chemicals that I had experienced were pumped through a vent near my table as some men that I thought I knew stood around and smiled. The reality of who I was dealing with hit home and it hit hard The Common Ground employees also visited my complex a couple of times. In retrospect it clarified why they were always asking me questions about my itinerary, and my views on the union-and why I did not just joint their group.

It was at this time that I decided that I had to move from Brookline after 30 years. The level of harassment by the property manager who I also believe is part of this same group, the violation of my civil rights as a tenant, and citizen became intolerable. The fact that the Druker Company did nothing to address my issues over the years contributed to the move.

It has been very difficult to be succinct in my writing because it has been and continues to be criminal activity still not investigated. I am asking out of respect that you ask the Boston Police and the FBI to investigate this matter. I have been made homeless as a result of these events. I think the least that Boston Public Schools can do is to demand an investigation in the interest of a retired teacher and out of concern for the city’s children.

    WHAT IF…?

What if your city kept investing money in the schools looking for improvement, but at times it seemed more like a losing battle? What if the foundation had cracks in it? What if there was some sort of decay in the structure? It would make so much of our efforts in educational reform an exercise in futility. In our systems of education there is a lot of futility and a lot of money being spent. But why are we not seeing the expected results? Why aren’t our children progressing the way they should in their education? What if corruption has taken hold of our schools? Can you build on corruption? It does not make much sense to build upon a corrupt structure expecting lasting results. Eventually the weight of the matter becomes more than it can handle, and there is a crash. And at our crash site the victims are our kids and their future.

I have seen homes where people thought it a good idea to install a satellite dish on their roof which appeared stable and had protected them from the elements over the years. But a few day or weeks later the decaying roof began to break down and the satellite dish was no longer serving its purpose. Or what about the wall you pulled down only to find out that mold was eating away at your interior of your home, to your surprise. We have individuals in our school systems that are destroying every serious effort and energy directed at the turnaround for our children. We knew something was up but we had no idea the extent of the corruption.

Exactly where is the mold and corruption in our schools?

    · Teachers who remained in the system and who were angry teachers during the period of busing and still maintain that anger express it blatantly or are always seething below the surface and generally directed at little boys of color. They recognize that Judge Garrity could not legislate their hearts but could only limit their actions- if their actions are or were eveAnd who would dare report a teacher caught up in the politics of hate and the teachers union of Boston Public Schools. It is a little difficult to present your case when you are living in fear as a teacher and administrator because you know that Judge Garrity only dealt with the tip of the iceberg. Institutional racism runs deep in Boston, and everyone is still afraid to talk about race, and yet too many of our children sit before us dying a little more-spiritually every day because of the inability of the adults to communicate about the impact of institutional racism in the schools.

    · Teachers who were laid off during bussing and in order to maintain a job went to South America or took intensive courses in Spanish and sit before Latino children, some loving and caring, and the most wonderful teachers a teacher will ever meet. BUT some of these haters still seething from the anger of those past moments that we dare discuss and now offer in some cases second generation Latino children a migrant education. And the Latino parent taught to revere the teacher will not imagine that someone would not love their child as they do and not want to educate them and would never dare to question teaching and learning. Thus the cycle begins. Latino parents also make the assumption that if the teacher or administrator is Latino then all is well. Is that the naiveté of the culture? As much as it hurts, there are some Latino teachers and administrators just collecting a paycheck. We ask ourselves how it is possible. Institutional Racism runs deep and is quite successful at utilizing people of color in this game of politics.

    · Many of these same angry white teachers now nurture young white teachers entering the school systems being certain to inform everyone that we must look out for them because they are so fragile, in essence they are saying that we must buy into the lie of white entitlement for young white teachers at the expense of young teachers of color and the children sitting before them. I have seen descent young white teachers come into the system and be corrupted by the generation soon to exit-learning to practice their negative language, expressions, prejudices and hate around our youth who are developing before them-under their tutelage. Unfortunately, now their practices of prejudice and racism must be undone, stripped and exposed in order for all children to receive a quality education from caring adults.

    · Then we have principals who are forced to play politics with these individuals in the schools tied to a corrupt union. Fortunately this hold the union has had on Boston is beginning to be adjusted to benefit the students who will spend an average of 12 years in the system. Accountability will inevitably play a key role. We will no longer allow our children to spend more than a decade in a decadent system of teaching and learning and at the end not have them ready to full participate in the society in which they live. Institutional racism is a plan to deny our children of color full access to the society

Now we have principals of all races who participate in the game of Institutional Racism. I have witnessed bilingual administrators not only participate but go above and beyond the call of duty to make it plain to their white colleagues, teachers, administrators and Court Street that they are not in any way attempting to go against status quo. Some of these administrators will sit silently by as their children suffer because they are not willing to make the necessary sacrifice. They keep telling us that the wheels of justice move slowly. to bring about that change they may have to sit down and talk with parents and be honest, sit down with community leaders and tell them what they don’t want to hear, and then sit down with Court Street and demand justice for these kids.

Then we have our young boys who come to school – many angry, and we wonder why. If you stop an angry elementary boy and engage them in a conversation they generally state without reservation that no one wants to listen to them-to hear their side of the story. Let us be serious-we know they are telling the truth. We know that no one wants to listen to them for the most part. How can you look an angry little elementary school child in the face and tell him, “No, I don’t want to listen to you. No one is even listening to me. I know that you are hurting at such a young age. I know that you are frustrated and not even out of 4th grade. You are right. I feel you but you are right. But I must keep my job-so I won’t complain. I will not fight. I can see that you are in the pipeline already. We talk about you. We say things like, “he is headed for trouble”. Even though my heart may ache on the outside I can’t speak for you because I too am on the outside as well as the inside of this corrupt system. If I complain I am out of a job. Some of you boys will make it through, but some won’t.”

Institutional racism does not discriminate. It exploits all-the willing, and the reluctant, the fearful, the confused, one who has loss a sense of their purpose for being, a person of any color, and any race, as long as it moves its extremist agenda forward. Boston is entrenched in institutional racism, and Black and Latino educators have played a major role in its enforcement. Until we reach the point that we can openly discuss race between ourselves without guilt, shame or fear, it will always have a strong hold on us as educators and our children. (The Vernon Johns Story DVD. Until we truly value our children above our careers and our paychecks we will continue to be pawns in this game of politics and our children the victims. The question is. “How much value do you place on our children” our precious and irreplaceable commodities. What message of value are we emanating, subliminally suggesting, reinforcing when we sit quietly by? We must cry for our children. If we don’t-no one else will. The parents, the community leaders must hold us accountable. That phenomenon called accountability keeps us strong. It is not a dirty word but rather a process cleaner and maintainer. That tells all that I have people that I must answer to about my actions or non actions in the schools and the coverage of our youth.

What is up with the gatekeepers? We stand at that gate. We were supposed to ready you for participation in society, but we fail so many of you-even one is many. So instead of boys prepared to fully participate in society-we have young men and women who function around it, just as its gatekeepers are not fully participating in this society. We have to be willing to make sacrifices to prepare our boys and girls for their “full participation” in society. I think we stopped after we got our jobs, our positions. Maybe we were tired and we forgot that we are in a fight for the next generation, and they must be prepared to do battle, trained and ready to not just survive this mess but to thrive as they pass through it. But I fear that the youth are ill-equipped. They do not realize that this is a battle, and we must live life and fight at the same time. I fear that we have neglected in training our children to do battle and therefore the future generations suffer. Maybe if they truly understood their history and truly understood in their spirit that there are people-individuals who are bent on their destruction, and want to determine that their participation is this society is limited. Maybe if they understood they would be willing to fight for themselves in the schools, on their jobs, in their neighborhoods, and be willing to fight for the next generation- we could make the progress toward the fulfillment for our future generations in this great American Dream.

Our schools have been corrupted by haters-individuals bent on the destruction of our youth-particularly the children of color. It is a plan devised to ensure that their spirits are quenched before they even leave elementary schools. It is designed to crush any hopes, dreams and possibilities of these young men and women that we have elected to serve. From this point on we must no longer lie to ourselves about the role that we played in the game of institutional racism and the times that we sacrificed our children by our silence, or participation. No more-just as someone stood in the gap for us-we too must stand in the gaps for our children. Prodding them along, encouraging and cajoling them forward into their destiny. After all they are our most-most precious commodity. (These haters also include library workers, hospital employess, chefs, public employees, transportation, day care, etc., and they interact with people every day. Imagine!)

The New KKK in Our Schools

The new KKK shares some similarities with their grandparents. Like their predecessors they suffer from delusional thinking that leads them to believe that they are entitled to whatever society has to offer simply based upon their skin color. This type of thinking and response is usually tied to the economics of the time. When jobs become scarce-white extremists attempt to immobilize groups of people to secure jobs for whites in America. These facts can be viewed through history texts. Of course in the real world that means discrimination and lack of access for people of color-particularly if you are a targeted race, denial and discrimination if you are different. It is so much a part of the network of our schools and societies that it is not recognizable and not obvious to the undiscerning. People of color end up as pawns in this game of institutional racism, unaware, and in many instances their silence and ignorance support institutional racism. They do not recognize the ramification of their decision whether voluntary or involuntary.

In the past the KKK were some of the most respected members of their communities holding even governmental offices, so think it not strange that educators of this day would be part of the tradition. Some of these haters come from a long line of haters and are proud of it and raise their children as such. Back in the day those haters wore white sheets and rode on horseback. Today a better tag for their descendants is simply “white extremists” because their thinking is extreme along with their actions and in most cases, is not based upon reality. They may drive electric cars, ride bikes, jog or walk to work. They may wear designer clothes and carry a lap top. They may live communally or in a “traditional” family setting. Oh, but believe me when I say that the new KKK is more deadly than their grandparents and one of the most insidious groups this nation has and will experience in our lifetime.

The KKK of today like the organization of the past has members from every sector of society. It can and does include maids, dog walkers, med students, law students, library workers, hospital emp., nurses, MBTA (corrupted union folks) and our dearly beloved educators-from the young to the seasoned senior. This is not the conclusion of the list of those who have aligned themselves with these white extremists in our schools. It just to gives you an idea of their networking practices in our country. They have members from various unions who are considered fringe unionists. A fringe unionist is the extremists on the job that tell you in the nicest way that you best go along to get along, or else…,. Think of the ramifications of individuals from various jobs uniting with the intent of doing harm to those who interfere with their white extremist agenda, whether that person is Black, White, Latino, Asian, or expresses different thinking?

These individual haters may take a job and generally present themselves as the model employee. They arrive early and leave late. But don’t be deceived by this dedication; it is just that these extremists have an agenda outside of their paid services in the field of education. First it must be established that these white extremists believe that they will one day soon rule the systems of this nation and the world, and nothing and no-one should be allowed to get in their way. No matter how bizarre or delusional their thinking may sound to the rational they hold to it.

This extremist group successfully recruits at the middle and high school level, and have gained much success at the college level, recruiting prospective teachers, engineers, computer freaks, and yes, even the teachers. In their initial stages of training they are taught how to smile and destroy at the same time. (Know those who labor among you!)
Let’s get to the facts of their onsite duties.

    · Secret cameras and listening devices to monitor students, teachers and administrators are put in place. This puts them at an advantage because they are always listening in to private conversations. Oh, yeah and those early and late hours invested at work, they get to read your email, personal letters, anything and everything that will give them a stronger stance in advancing their white extremist agenda. In the school setting they like to see where you are with your students so they can stay or at least appear to be right in tune or ahead of you.

    · These white extremists have been able to place with assistance chemical dispersion equipment in and around the schools or buildings they work in. The chemicals they choose may vary with their purpose. In a school they can target a teacher, a student, a family of children, a group of teachers, administrators, etc… So, that child that is suddenly experiencing migraine intense headaches, toothache or a teacher can’t explain that twitch on her neck, wrist, palm, or eyelash may be experiencing the work of biochemical extremists on the job. The devices they use are such that they can spray from a distance up your pants leg, dress, sleeve, under a coat or hat, etc, and all the while you are searching for answers with your doctor. The answer may be the biochemical terrorist teacher next door. I “tell ya” they are not using the same tactics as their mama and papa’s used back in the day.

    · Let’s say we have an experienced Black or White teacher on the job and these extremists want to create an appearance of incompetence directed at a Black or another teacher of color, they will utilize chemicals to put one child to sleep or the whole class, or why not make them just act crazy. This type of activity may explain some of the classroom actions and it could mean some one’s job, too.

    · Imagine the advantage of knowing just what the administrator is looking for and always being prepared in advance because…, or how about accessing some-one’s computer network during your late night visits and creating havoc with their stored work-looking for their weak points and their strong points. They also like to read student work so they can stay ahead of the educational game and to be certain that no teacher of color in moves or advances ahead unless approved by their cell group of haters.

    · In reference to targeting one part of the body with a chemical-there is no stopping them. They are definitely extremists. They continue to target your body until you will eventually have to visit the doctor and/or take meds, and who knows if they have a hook up in the doctor’s office or the local CVS.

    · By listening in on student conversation during class times, bathroom visits, or talking with other administrators would have you to believe they deeply care when in essence they are violating the laws of the land

    · The dust around your key board and your classroom may actually be dust from the extremist fairy circling the building via the chemical dispersion equipment.

    · These extremists function without a conscience and do not hesitate at doing anything even if it harms students or teachers. These folks with their false sense of grandeur do not belong in our public, private, parochial, charter, pilot or independent schools. They absolutely must be weeded out of every school and institution and exposed. Then these extremists must be penalized to the fullest extent of the law.

    · Take this scenario: You are about to give a presentation. You have the support of everyone on the staff. You just happen to be one of the really “likables” and the teachers decide to let this one pass (because WE KNOW in reality…,). Suddenly, you feel like you could take a ten hour nap and the rest of the crew looks sleepy, too. What’s going on? It could be that insecure, hateful extremist fairy sprinkling the dust around to make sure that you do not receive the recognition. Imagine having these personality types of individuals in our schools, libraries, hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, etc. Don’t the school systems have enough challenges?

    · Then there is the car fairy who likes to dust your car in a split second. As a matter of fact they can sit in a car with you and dust it at the same time. Maybe they will sprinkle your clothing and again with no explanation you feel like you are about to drop off in to sleep-a deep sleep. Unexplainable? HMMM? They also like to put some kind of paste on the steering wheel, glass, handles, hoping that you touch it, or that the rain may activate it, spilled coffee, soda, etc… I kid you not when I say they can sit right next to and feign sincere interest while “chemicalizing” you.

    · It has been proven that we are losing young black teachers. The white extremists try to prevent successes of young Blacks and individuals of color because they feel that they may connect better with the students of color. So situations and scenarios are intentionally created to frustrate the efforts of these young teachers and to undermine their organizational and teaching strengths. The ultimate aim is for the teacher to leave the system.

    · Now think it not strange that they know where your kids attend school, etc, and these are the facts that they collect-anything that they can use that will promote their white extremist agenda. Even scarier is the fact that they have joined hands with other extremists from various sectors. Just use your imagination and consider the ramifications of their concerted efforts of deluded individuals intending to do bodily harm.

    · You will notice that at certain key times if they do not have a co-extremist on the job with them-they will disappear to take care of business. The life work of an extremist never ends on the job.

Best advice is to have a place for everything. Get rid of junk and find one or two of those kids who would clean the whole school every day if you let them to help maintain order in the class and the office. Don’t make it easy for the on the job extremists. (Sweep the floor, empty the garbage and no scraps around the class or in students’ desks)

It is frightening to think that these personality types not only utilize these chemicals daily, but that they want society to think of them as normal and allow them to work with our most precious commodity-children. But then white extremist do not consider children of color to be precious at all.

All of this seems impossible and improbable until you put it all together. How could this happen in our Little America in the year 2009? It happened and continues to happen because we the people were sleeping, and we the people got tired of maintaining a democracy that works for all and not just our own. It is in this dark area of our fears, our prejudices, our hate, our confusion, broken promises, and our ignorance that these white extremists breed. Our negatives opened up the door to allow these insecure haters to function at this level in our society to this day. We can and must turn this situation around. It will take a concerted effort by us all to accomplish this task. I fear that if we do not begin to talk, America as we know America will no longer be the America we know, and the haters win. But I know that the true Americans will not allow this to happen in this nation.

This situation can be seen as a wakeup call for the young and the old to put this issue to rest but to keep it at rest. Out of this experience we will witness true global leaders rising up from the ashes of this experience and creating communities with a richer and deeper understanding of America, its purpose and the dream that has yet to be fulfilled. Instead of America leading by bullying and utilizing rhetoric to project a false image, we will now lead by example through our experience. We will understand the detrimental effects of corruption on society because we have experienced it. We will recognize that you cannot build or improve when you have corrupt individuals permeating your institutions even if they are friends or relatives or “upstanding citizens”. We will recognize the challenge of the challenge before us and meet it head on. Yes, we will lose some friends, anger some co-workers, and frustrate family, but that is what it takes to be true leaders.

America must and will lead by example. These haters don’t think Americans are strong enough or bold enough to meet the challenge. This may have been true in the past. At that time it did not matter because the challenge was not knocking at every one’s back door-but now it is. A lesson for this was spoken so succinctly by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”

I should be offended at an injustice directed at your child simply because it is unjust, and you should be offended at an injustice against my child simply because it is unjust. Denial of a quality education to any child on American soil is an injustice and should not be tolerated. Remember, until my injustice becomes your injustice and vice-versa the breeding ground will continue to expand for these haters. We opened the door to them by our fears, ignorance, and prejudices and hate. No one else opened the door but us. It is up to us to close the door to this white extremism in America by rooting them out of every school system in our nation and persecuting them to the fullest extent of the law. We can do this and must do this for our children and their children’s children.

Dr. Vernon John said, “If you see a good fight, jump in!”

Martin Luther King Jr. – Strength to Love, 1963
    - The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
