Latino and African-American unemployment remains high

According to unemployment numbers included at a National Institute for Latino Policy report, Latino unemployment in the U.S. remains disproportionately high.

Despite White House claims about a rebounding economy, both Latinos and African-Americans are suffering the effects of a jobless “recovery.”

The Government reported that last month overall unemployment dropped to 9.7 percent from 10 percent but the data shows a rise in Latino and African-American unemployment.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Latino households in January was an estimated 12.6 percent, compared to 8.7 percent for non-Latino Whites.

While making up 15 percent of the country’s population (not including Puerto Rico), the 2,849,000 Latinos who were unemployed in January 2010 represented 30.6 percent of the total unemployed in the US.

Since January of last year, the unemployment rate for Latinos rose from 9.9 to 12.6 percent. It was, however, little changed from December 2009.

Among Latino adults (ages 20 and over), the unemployment rate for Latino women last month was 11.5 percent, compared to 13.8 percent for Latino men. For young Latinos (ages 16 to 19), the unemployment rate was 37.2 percent.

These unemployment numbers actually are a low estimation of reality. These statistics do not usually reflect the underemployed and those who are not actively participating in the unemployment system.

The numbers are even higher in the undocumented immigrant community, workers who were never part of the government unemployment system.

An investigation funded by The Open Society Institute and disseminated by New America Media and The Final Call shows that the stimulus bill President Obama signed last year did little to slow the rise in African-Americans and Latino unemployment.

Despite the latest data from the Department of Labor, unemployment among African-Americans and Latinos has reached record levels.

Black unemployment will rise from 16 percent to 17 percent by the third quarter of 2010, compared to unemployment among Whites and Latinos, which will reach 9 percent and 14 percent, respectively, according to new projections by the Economic Policy Institute.

Further, analyst and author Kai Filion indicated in his report, “Downcast Unemployment Forecast,” jobless rates among Blacks in Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and South Carolina will climb above 20 percent.

It will go above 12 percent for Latinos in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Nevada, New Jersey and New York.

Extending the unemployment benefits is important, but people need steady job creation and more than quick fixes, argued Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, associate professor of education at Columbia University.

Lavar Young, director of the Newark Comprehensive Center for Fathers (also known as the Fatherhood Center), which helps men who have lost their jobs, homes, or are reentering the work force after incarceration transition, observed that a few new construction projects in northeast New Jersey and New York could mean work for a few Black men over the next 10 years. But except for that, he said, the stimulus package hasn’t created much employment for people he works with on a daily basis.

“It came out as a big bang and a lot of federal dollars being spread around, but it’s not getting to the ground level where it’s having a major impact and helping people and families get back on their feet. People are losing their houses every day,” Young said.

The stimulus funds are not truly helping to reduce unemployment for the hardest hit so-called minority populations.

I thought Obama and the Democrats were going to help these minority groups from the evil Bush years… What a farce this administration is!!!

What a farce your comment is. Think about it. An intellectual you are not, nice slip of the brain. “These”

Trunzo for President since he knows more grammar than the rest of us here!

In the 1950′s there was higher employment. Also, it seems as if the male spouse had the 1 job
to support the family. Nowadays it seems the female spouse has taken more of the jobs that could
go to the Males. Also, immigration and illegal immigration is taking 60% of white workers jobs
according to the book “State of Emergency”. So what does Bush, Obama and their respective
so-called congressional leaders do in response: they allow for illegals and more immigration, etc.
to over tax an already “limited job pool” in the USA. Reagan’s optomism and theory of limitless
Abundance has proved to be wrong. Pass out the jelly beans because soon the limited job market
won’t be able to feed the masses. And in the 50′s population was lower yet jobs more plentiful.
So less was more. So population growth and destructive developement growth are not the answer
to our countries problems. Also, perhaps the GOVT should do a study on which areas of occupation
such as the health care profession or food service, industry is best for an area of Community College
study. The GOVT could then funnel students of the future into the right category or professions.

That’s a really interesting comment, Larry, when you think about it: “Also, immigration and illegal immigration is taking 60% of white workers jobs according to the book ‘State of Emergency’. ”

That statement presumes that “white workers” actually have a higher claim to a job than anyone else in the world. Why would you presume such a thing? For that matter, why would you even have to presume that a native-born citizen has a superior claim to job than anyone else in the world?

Personally, I think both the GOP and the USA would be better off if we deported the Tea Party members and their sense of entitlement to the benefits of US citizenship without being willing to pay for them, and replace each one with a Mexican or other immigrant, some of whom want to be Americans and contribute to this country so badly that they’re willing to break a few minor laws to do it. Those are my kind of Americans.

Hey, where did that racist comment from that guy go, why would you take down a comment now, that was very significant and representative at least take the replys down too.

  5. The left has failed to champion black and latino entrepreneurship as part of any robust plan for job creation in communities of color. We have always had problems with access to capital. This recession has compounded these historical problems. Freeing up more money to put in the hands of small businesses will provide a lifeline for communities that need it most.

    • judi says:

Well said!! Instead of freeing up capital, the current gov’t policy locks more of it up!! Minorities need work and opportunity not more hand outs.

I wonder what countries like Mexico and San Salvador and others will do when the dollars the illigal Alians and families here in the Usa can’t send money back into their countries ? what will happen when the drug addicts here in the USA that buy all the drugs from the drug pushers and cartels can’t make money off the American druggies because they can’t steal from stores and parents because all the stores are going out of business and the parents are broke and have no jobs what will the drug providers do??

Predatory Lending is a major contributor to the economic turmoil we are currently experiencing.

Here is an example of what I am talking about:
Scott Veerkamp / Predatory Lending (Franklin Township School Board Member.)

Please review this information from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley regarding deceptive lending practices:
“Steering payments were made to brokers who enticed unsuspecting homeowners into deceptive and expensive mortgages. These secret bonus payments, often called Yield Spread Premiums, turned home mortgages into a SCAM.”

The Center for Responsible Lending says YSP “steals equity from struggling families.”
    1. Scott collected nearly $10,000 on two separate mortgages using YSP and junk fees. 2. This is an average of $5,000 per loan. 3. The median value of the properties was $135,000. 4. Clearly, this type of lending represents a major ripoff for consumers.

There are structural elements that continue to create problem outcomes. Part of what’s at issue is definitions. For those of us who were fortunate enough to be in college during the 1960s the ongoing dialogue was about over-population and the impending doom. The question was always the same, “What do we do about it?” It remains our main dilemma. Do we have enough for everyone to have what they want? Each person defines for themselves what the ‘good life’ means. That is not a power inherent in the public domain. I have my definition and reserve the same right for you.

The 2010 midterm elections will be here, and most expect Republicans to create big gains in the two chambers of Congress. While prevailing opinion holds the fact that GOP will take covering the House of Representatives, usually there are some dissenters among national political figures. The Senate outlook is even more messy, but it is generally accepted that Republicans face a steeper climb to consider back the upper chamber.

Along with the whole thing which appears to be building throughout this subject material, your points of view are relatively exciting. However, I beg your pardon, but I can not give credence to your whole suggestion, all be it radical none the less. It would seem to everyone that your comments are generally not completely justified and in fact you are generally yourself not completely convinced of your point. In any case I did enjoy reading through it.

  27. I am a 28 year old black young lady that is trying to live a life that really is sat up for me to fail. The reason for this feelings is when we apply for grants or other things in society we are asked one main question and that is are gender, if its not the gender of a white american then are applications is denied. With out seeing if we qualify for the grants or not. Things like this been happening for along time now is there anyway we can get back something that have been taking from us for a hundred plus years. A panini is simply a toasted sandwich which, like many simple things, can be elevated to greatness with careful attention to detail. Some of the things to consider when preparing a great panini are how it looks, feels and tastes. You do not need to spend a lot of money on fancy equipment to make a great Panini. These sandwiches can be prepared using a grill pan, an electric press or even a good kitchen skillet. The key to a great panini is not the equipment used to grill it but rather the attention to detail in its preparation.
