California Water Crisis: Why Should You Care?

| Print This Post Print This Post

By Teresa Hernandez.

Water means prosperity

California Water Crisis? Why?… I am just a regular gal, a wife, a mom, owner of a small business and live in Southern California. So why am I angry? Why do I care about the lack of water in Central California? This is why…. The Central Valley was once the breadbasket of our Nation, rich in agriculture it exported 90% of the fresh fruits and vegetables our Country consumed. Today, this valley is turning into a “dust bowl” desert. Families who once worked this farmland used to enjoy their homes and community but are now unemployed. These people are now in food lines watching their livelihood turn into a virtual wasteland. Several of the Central Valley towns now have up to 40% unemployment. hispnics should be outraged! A majority of the unemployed are immigrants that worked the fields with a temporary work permit, the rest are permanent residents. Where are all of the Activist groups? Why are they not shouting at the top of their lungs about this injustice? I do not hear them… just silence.

I realize we have had dry conditions, I understand we have an old water delivery system that needs to be repaired and updated. However the majority of this problem is a man-made water crisis created by Congress, the Environmental Defense Fund and other environmentalist groups. Due to their efforts they have helped turn off the pumps that supply drinking water to 25 million people in Southern California and the Central Valley farmland which produces the food we eat. Politicians and environmentalist are cutting off the water supply under the pretense of saving a two inch fish called the Delta Smelt. Some of our water is now being diverted to the San Francisco Bay Area to save this fish but this water diversion has done nothing to increase the population of the fish.

Do Bay area politicians really care about this fish? What happened to this State? What about people first? What is the real agenda behind these environmentalists and Bay area politicians?

The benefits to Bay area politicians Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer who all live in the Bay area are obvious. The Bay area is their territory! When they take our water and divert it to the San Francisco Bay area free of charge, this additional water equals increased building and job growth for that area. Why? Because water equals prosperity.

Where water flows money goes. This is all about money! If it was really about the environment then the Obama administration, the EPA, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer would be going nuts that Bay area cities are dumping raw sewage into the Bay-Delta! Why don’t they say and do something about this sewage that is destroying the Delta environment and killing the fish? Because they do not give a rip about the fish, they only care about the water. Water equals “money”.

Central Valley Farmers and 25 million Southern California residents are paying more for water because Bay Area politicians are taking the water we have paid for and sending it to the ocean. Congressman Devin Nunes (R) presented legislation 7 times in 2009 to turn the pumps back on and 7 times the Democrats in Congress blocked his bills. In the meantime farms and southern California jobs are drying up and all of us are paying more for less water.

So back to the point why should you or I care? Because this affects our pocket books! These politicians are causing higher food prices and higher unemployment in California. This insanity must stop!

So here is the call to action. This June and November, make a difference! I will let my wrath out on my Ballot and I encourage you to do the same. Together we can make a difference. If any candidate puts fish and bugs before women and children, I will vote them out. Let’s vote in people that can help Congressmen Nunes get those pumps turned on!

I will meet you at the polls!

We need Teresa to run for office and help us get out of this mess that we find ourselves in, you can do it …. We will back you!

  2. ipastor says:

This is ANTI-ENVIRONMENTALIST cheap shot DISGUISED as BOGUS Populism. SINCE wHen ARE the COSErvaTIVES IN CaliforniA WATER CONSERVATIONISTS or frieDS of THE farMER haNDS, ThE ImmIgranT, or THE FISH fOr that MaTTEr.

    • Teresa Hernandez says:

I am not an anti-environmentalist, I believe in taking care of our planet. However, commonsense has to to be used when dealing with environmental issues, like putting people before smelt.

    • Monica Lopez says:

How can this be anti-environmentalist? facts are facts. Fish are being put above humans, end of story. Families are suffering, fact! Farms are drying out, fact! Crops are gone, fact! All this for a pescado? You actually care more about a pescado than people? This is not about Conservatives and water conservation or anything else. This is about farmers, their families, their lives. You mourn for a fish but not the farmers? You talk against conservatives because we say foul? You are dead wrong on this pastor. How dare you call this bogus. Bogus is your ideology that is putting families last. You should be ashamed of yourself. Be grateful the fish are fine then, verdad?

      • ipastor says:

Fishing is also an industry that is affected by this decision. I live in California and none of these issues are known to be championed by conserves here. Not water conservation, not farmers and immigrants rights, not smelt, not water infrastructure, not families affected by the drought . I like your Spanglish, esa.

  3. be afraid says:

ipastor: You are missing the point completely. It is sad, in a way, that you are because it is people like you that blindly go to the polls and vote democract every time.

Keep your head in the sand because because the central valley will be just that….Sand.

  4. ipastor says:

    “head in the sand”
    “like putting people before smelt”.
    “OUTRAGED!”

Nothing but taking points, Palinesque, all sauce and no meatballs. When your focus is on this

“I realize we have had dry conditions, I understand we have an old water delivery system that needs to be repaired and updated”
and not smelt then you’ll have something and please stop it with the crazy captioning, just because you are a “regular gal” doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use regular English. It lack seriousness.

I’m still waiting to have my questions answer.

    • Martha Jones says:

Questions… you have questions? We thought you knew everything iPastor… Teresa Hernandez´s article is right on target.

      • ipastor says:

        Yeah, how so Martha?

    Hey California!

    California Farmers
    The New Endangered Species

I’m just a citizen from Texas who wants nothing but for these people to be able to farm and feed their families. I will be making donations to your “current elected” officials, opponent. I will encourage all other citizens of Texas to do so as well. Your elected officials voting decisions not only affect your state, but all other states as well. Yeah. I’ve got a pony in this race as well!

    • ipastor says:

“citizens of Texas” is this code for secessionists.

  6. CbR says:

As a Rancher & Farmer myself, ipastor should strap on the boots he so willingly refutes. The farmers and ranchers are heads and heels above the enviro’s in land stewardship. Take a lesson dude and until you have worked a season in the farmers boots, given the regulatory conditions we have to produce in today, you don’t have a crop, cow or horse in this conversation.

    • ipastor says:

      me, me , me

      • CbR says:

That will be your plea when the slim handouts are picked amd passed out from the dumpsters in your concrete jungle. Enjoy your meal should you survive the mobs aggression.

  7. Southern Tragedy says:

ipastor: Excuse me? Taking liberal talking points? Farmer’s are all about me me me? Silly kid. Farmer’s are all about you, you, you. So are truckers. Soooo, when are you going to move out of your parents basement? I’ll give you 5 bucks to hire a moving van.

    • ipastor says:

“Silly kid. Farmer’s are all about you, you, you. So are truckers. Soooo, when are you going to move out of your parents basement? I’ll give you 5 bucks to hire a moving van.”

Right, this is so full of conservative wisdom I’m putting W poster on my wall. I have a job and I’m a vet, since apparently I have to show ID to you.

  8. Thanks to innovation we are producing more with less land use and materials. The sprawl of farmland has decreased not increased. So is the same thing with water use. I actually want to invest in growing soy. It is a good cash crop. What is going on in California is sad. The choice between people and the environment is a false choice. We can do both. By supporting local farmers here at home we decrease our reliance on imported food. Other countries have less regulation than we do. They waste a lot more and pollute more. Also the pollution from transport is immense. By supporting local growers we help the environment and create jobs.

  9. JLAW says:

IPASTOR- While I thank you for serving our Nation, I must say you are a troubled individual. Mrs. Hernandez states the FACTS and the real problem is the Democratic leadership in Congress defending environmental lunatics, who want to save a 2 inch fish….Yes, Californians have a horrible history of water conservation, and alot of that is due to infrastructure. But in order to help reduce 40% unemployment(Mendota County, CA) we need to turn the pumps on immediatly!!

    • ipastor says:

My country has thank me enough and my state is famous for its conservations efforts. While the rest of the country have used more energy and foreign oil throughout the last two decades, CA through the will of Californians, smart environmental legislation, and guts, we have been able to consume energy at a flat level, while still being the most productive state in the nation. Too bad Arnold really screw things up. So why should we listen to people who have fish in their head.
