Polls Show Increasing Support for Arizona Immigration Law

In the current survey, 76% of Republicans disapprove of Obama’s handling of immigration policy, while just 8% approve.

The more the activist groups oppose the newly passed Arizona immigration law, the more Americans seem to support it

This “controversial” law has called the attention of several recent polls. Surveys by the Pew Research Center and the Wall Street Journal/NBC show broad support for the new Arizona immigration law.

The Arizona law has been portrayed by critics as a tool that allows for racial profiling of Hispanics but Americans seem to have taken the time to read it and understand its contents.

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, was conducted May 6-9 among 994 adults and it has shown a different story than the one portrayed so far by the mainstream media.

The Pew Poll was released this week, shows that more than 60 percent of Americans support the Arizona law’s separate provisions, which give police increased authority to question and detain people they suspect of being in the country illegally.

Fully 73% say they approve of requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them.

Two-thirds (67%) approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify their legal status, while 62% approve of allowing police to question people they think may be in the country illegally.

The survey finds that Democrats are evenly split over Arizona’s new immigration law: 45% approve of the law and 46% disapprove.

Republicans overwhelmingly approve of the law and three provisions tested. Similarly, among independents there is little difference in opinions of the new Arizona law (64% approve) and its elements, which are viewed positively.

As has been the case since last fall, the public is highly critical of President Barack Obama’s handling of immigration policy.

Just 25% approve of the way Obama is handling the issue, while more than twice as many (54%) disapprove. That is little changed from last month (29% approve) and down slightly from last November (31%).

In the current survey, 76% of Republicans disapprove of Obama’s handling of immigration policy, while just 8% approve.

Independents disapprove of Obama’s job on the issue by more than two-to-one (57% to 25%).

Even among Democrats, as many disapprove (38%) as approve (37%) of the way he is handling the issue, while a quarter (25%) offer no opinion.

Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut said he was surprised by how popular the elements of the law are.

“What’s going on here is while the public has had moderate views on dealing with the immigration problem, like support for a path to citizenship, they’ve long thought that more has to be done to protect to borders and to get better enforcement,” Kohut said.

A similar poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal and NBC tells a similar story: 64 percent of American adults support the Arizona law.

Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department may file a lawsuit challenging the law on the basis that it could lead to civil rights violations.

Unfortunately, Mr. Holder has not read the bill as it has been reported by Hot Air after Holder himself told the House Judiciary Committee: “I’ve just expressed concerns on the basis of what I’ve heard about the law. But I’m not in a position to say at this point, not having read the law, not having had the chance to interact with people are doing the review, exactly what my position is.”

The people is wise. AZ law follows federal law. Leftist politicians and activists are the ones messing this country. AG Holder… not even reading the bill…. What a farce!

Shame on you, by supporting the Arizona Law, which is totally discrimatory & profile people by the race.
A friend of mine from Fresno, was driving a big rig over in Phoenix, got stop by the Sheriff, arrested for a week until his wife show up with the birth certificate, why all this happening? because he is hispanic, even know he was born here.
That’s what you are supporting, SHAME ON YOU !!!!
I am a republican, I am not going to vote as republican next time!!
    SHAME ON REPUBLICANS RACISTS!!!

Alejandro, The law is not in place yet so your so called friend could not have been arrested under the law. It sounds like you are making this up just like your statement that you are a Republican. My guess is that you have not even read the law and do not even know what is contained in it. But that will not stop you and all the other knee jerk liberals from whining about it as if you know what is going on.

    • gerry gardiner says:

Alejandro, if that is your name, where was your “friend” detained for a law that hasn’t even gone into effect? I know a lot of sheriffs out here and I promise to check up on this. You give no details which could be so easily checked, if true. If you don’t write back, we can all be assured your writing is as phony as your claim to being a Republican is. Be smarter next time, your’s wasn’t even a good try.

    • gerry gardiner says:

Law, which….profile people by the race: got stop by the sheriiff: why all this happening?:

even know he was born here: REPUBLICANS RACISTS: ????????????

I may have been too harsh. Considering you can’t spell and have no grasp of grammar, it’s probably as good a letter as you could produce.

Evangelista: I’d like here in Spain we had Republican Racists to kick out all of that Columbians, Equatorians, Morrocans, Africans and all of that kind of thridwordldist people. Good for nothing

  3. That’s funny, because the law, AZ SB1070, isn’t in effect until 90 days after its signing. You should check out “Kali-fornia’s” immigration bill; “California’s penal code section 834b requires, not merely permits, law enforcement to attempt to verify the immigration status of people who are suspected of being in the US illegally.”

“The California law requires verification of immigration status when a person has been arrested. Undersection 834 of the Calif. Penal Code, that means when a person has been taken into custody. Arizona requires verification when there has been “any lawful stop, detention, or arrest.” Note that HB2162, the amendments to the original Arizona law, inserted “any lawful stop, detention or arrest” in place of “contact .Arizona requires verification when there is “reasonable suspicion” that the person being stopped, detained,or arrested might be in the US illegally. California does not require “reasonable” suspicion. Verification is required only if it is “suspected” that the person is in the US illegally.”

I guess it’s time to include California in the boycott…

      The_Basseteer,

It’s hard to argue with well researched information. A dying art in today’s society where we communicate politically by attacking and destroying the opposition. Well said.

I support states’ rights and there is legal precedent for the same. The federal government is not doing its job and is not interested in taking on the immigration issue as evidenced by AG Holder’s refusal to read the text of the law. His actions of speaking to the press and disseminating opinions about the law are dangerous and ridiculous; even school children in AZ have read the new law.

It is imperative that we secure the southern border immediately and create an orderly, sensible system that allows for lawful immigration and lawful guest worker and student visas and protects the innocent. I believe that it is the federal government’s failure to establish an orderly and sensible process at the border which has allowed the criminal element to take over immigration. Hello drug traffickers, human traffickers, coyotes, and corrupt border officials. Why can’t the greatest nation on Earth secure its own southern border????

Once the border is secure, then we can create a path to citzenship and a civil penalty for those immigrants who have jumped ahead in line and are here illegally. We have twelve million people who are living on the fringes of our society. No wonder there’s chaos! America is a better place because of the values of hard work and family first brought by most Hispanic immigrants.

I don’t understand why people don’t respect and supoort states rights? Is NONE of your business how AZ conducts and reinforces their laws, just like in some states where the legalize medicinal marijuana. Some people have an opinion and may not agree with it(like I) but is their state, their laws, is in the original American Constitution.

Sates have a right to protect their citizens, property and economic situations. Each state is different and each has their own laws. And now all of the “Wild Wild West” “cares” about Illegal aliens? Don’t give me that crap, I don’t buy it one bit and I don’t buy their reason. Is a shame to liberty, self-sacrifice and egalitarian rights. And I hope AZ shuts you down L.A. Maybe for once stop putting your nose in people’s Biz! Though is unrealistically but I will laugh at you guys.

Ever heard of the Song, “Dani California from the Chili Peppers?” Looks like your teeth are finally showing, and that’s what you get…the HARD WAY!!!

  6. Myke says:

Alejandro Please tell me why you and all the people who sneaked across the border didn’t fight for your
rights in your own country. Mexico is a wealthy country who could have provided jobs for you decades ago. Instead they let you live in poverty or sneak across the border and let the big growers exploit you. Which they will still do if there is amnesty. America cannot be the worlds HMO and ATM. and still prosper so you will end up living the same way you did in Mexico. Which country will you run to then?
Which country will you bankrupt next? It isn’t the Reps who are hurting you. It is the Dems who want you hear for your low wages. Do you think the big growers or the people who hire you want to pay you more money? They support the Dems and amnesty because that way they will never run out of people to exploit for low wages.

  7. Myke says:

sorry about the misspelling of hear ..here…..mistype
