In Ecuador, a crushed and silenced democracy

By Pedro Nikken. The sentence against Ecuadoran newspaper El Universo, its opinion editor, Emilio Palacio Urrutia, and its three top executives, Carlos Eduardo Pérez Barriga, César Enrique Pérez Barriga, and Carlos Nicolás Pérez Lapentti, for supposed offenses against Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa in Palacio’s article “NO to lies,” is a worn-out manifestation of the perverse concept of public freedoms that certain elected governments manipulate. They pervert their legitimacy with an authoritarian self-assuredness that permeates their exercise of power.

I live in Ecuador and it is incredible to see how our country, that by tradition has been a USA’s friend, is going in another direction only because our President has personal issues and a deeply resentment against USA. His father was in jail in your country. He also have hard feelings toward rich people everywhere. Rafael Correa have an explosive temper and if someone contradicts him, he automatically get furious and irrational.

The problem with El Universo is only one of the problems. Ecuador is now an ally of Iran, Ecuador supportsSiria, the italian police found drugs in Ecuador’s diplomatic suitcase, Correa is against the Human Rights Comission and it is trying to convince other countries to limit HRC’s budget in order to minimize its field of action, this week the ecuadorian chancellor, a former sandinista supporter, said that Ecuador will not accept the order of the Inter-American comission for Human Rights, he also said Ecuador will not conssent in the safeguard asked by Panama in favor of Carlos Perez, owner of El Universo, that ask for diplomatic asylum. Ecuador is also trying to boycott next American countries meeting in Cartagena, etc., etc….
