The Right to Self-Defense

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in favor of the constitutional right to bear arms is a historic milestone that clearly defends one of the ten original amendments to the Constitution, a historic right that defines the identity of this country and facilitates individuals’ defense of themselves, an essential right in a truly free democracy. The Supreme court ruled that access to and bearing of arms by citizens is a fundamental constitutional right that no state or municipal government can take away.

The Obama–Netanyahu Meeting: Closer Cooperation Needed

When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with President Barack Obama on Tuesday, they will discuss policy questions related to the precarious situation in Gaza, the stalemated Israeli–Palestinian peace negotiations, the growing Iranian threat, and other issues. But the main purpose of the summit will be to build better personal relations between the two leaders, restore mutual trust at the highest levels of their governments, and lay the foundation for closer cooperation in the future. No significant progress is possible on peace negotiations, or on stabilizing Israel’s volatile neighborhood, without a strong and effective Israeli–American partnership.

In a strongly competitive culture like that of the United States, awards are an important encouragement, motivation, and honor bestowed for effort and a job well done. Some awards are losing prestige as they are devalued for diverse reasons: political leanings, loss of influence, undeserving award-winners, scandals, etc. Even so, some awards conserve their original function of rewarding hard work and excellence.
